We spent 24 hours exploring ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s most luxurious malls! From Michelin food and riverside cafes to luxury shopping and rooftop views.
Our First Impression of ICON SIAM
There are malls… and then there’s ICONSIAM.
Before visiting Bangkok, we honestly didn’t understand why people talked about malls so much in Thailand. Back home in Canada, malls are usually somewhere you quickly stop into for errands or maybe grab coffee before leaving again. They are not anything special at all.
Bangkok completely changed that perspective for us.
What we thought would be a quick stop to escape the heat somehow turned into several days here and there spent exploring floating markets, luxury cafes, rooftop views, incredible restaurants and some of the most visually impressive spaces we’ve seen anywhere in the world.
From the moment we arrived, the scale of the place was honestly shocking. It was storeys upon storeys of stores and waterfalls, and food!
Everything feels massive. The ceilings are huge, the luxury storefronts seem endless, and every floor somehow feels more polished than the last. Even arriving at ICONSIAM feels dramatic, especially if you take the river shuttle across the Chao Phraya River.
It feels less like a shopping mall and more like a luxury destination.
And honestly, that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
Bangkok Malls are completely different
One thing that surprised us most about Bangkok was realizing malls here are more than just shopping centres.
They’re social spaces.
People come here to spend entire afternoons with friends, families or even just by themselves. Some come for the restaurants, others for cafes, luxury shopping, movies or simply to escape Bangkok’s intense heat for a few hours.
And once you experience it, it completely makes sense.
Bangkok is hot. Really hot.
Stepping inside ICONSIAM or any mall in Thailand after wandering through the city feels like entering another world entirely. Everything is cool, polished, comfortable and beautifully designed.
Unlike many malls in North America that feel repetitive and transactional, ICONSIAM feels immersive (and that’s why we love it). Every area feels intentionally designed to make you want to stay longer.
There’s always another cafe to discover, another dessert to try or another riverside view worth stopping for.
Sooksiam was our favourite and we spent hours there!
As impressive as the luxury stores and riverfront views were, the part of ICONSIAM we found ourselves returning to was SOOKSIAM. We spent a lot of time at SOOKSIAM.
Located on the lower level of the mall, SOOKSIAM feels like stepping into a completely different world, something we have never seen before.
One minute you’re walking past designer storefronts and polished marble floors. The next, you’re surrounded by wooden market stalls, traditional Thai architecture, long-tail boats, and the smell of fresh food being cooked right in front of you.
The space was designed to showcase food, culture, crafts, and products from different regions of the country, all under one roof. Everywhere we looked there seemed to be something new to discover.
Some stalls served dishes we immediately recognized from our travels around Thailand. Others offered foods we had never seen before.
People gathered around food vendors, families explored the market-style walkways, and visitors stopped constantly to take photos of the elaborate displays and floating market-inspired design.
It was one of those places where every corner seemed to reveal another snack, another dessert, or another small detail.
For us, SOOKSIAM was the perfect reminder of what makes Thailand such a special destination… A food destination.
If you only have time to see one part of ICONSIAM, make sure SOOKSIAM is on your list.
The Riverfront Views Might Be The Real Attraction
Our first introduction to ICONSIAM was on one of the dinner river cruises, and let me tell you.. we were blown away!
There is something about Bangkok’s waterfront that completely changes the atmosphere.
If you’re visiting ICONSIAM, don’t make the mistake of spending your entire visit indoors.
The waterfront is a huge part of what makes this place special.
One thing that immediately caught our attention was the number of dinner cruises departing from the area.
Throughout the evening, beautifully lit boats moved along the river carrying guests past some of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks.
Watching them glide by made it easy to understand why river cruises have become one of the city’s most popular experiences.
From the waterfront at ICONSIAM, you can watch cruise boats pass beneath the bridges, travel toward Wat Arun, and continue through the heart of Bangkok as the skyline lights up around them.
Even if you don’t book a cruise yourself, simply watching them from the riverfront adds to the atmosphere.
That said, if you’re looking for a memorable evening in Bangkok, a dinner cruise would be hard to beat.
Seeing the city illuminated at night while floating along the Chao Phraya River is one of those experiences that constantly appears on travelers’ Bangkok bucket lists.
The Rooftop Views Were Worth The Trip Upstairs
By the time we reached the upper levels of ICONSIAM, we thought we had already seen the highlights and we wanted Starbucks (which is on the roof).
From above, the Chao Phraya River winds through the city while ferries and dinner cruises move across the water below. Bangkok’s skyline stretches into the distance, creating one of the most impressive views we found anywhere in the city.
If possible, try to visit later in the afternoon and stay through sunset. As the city lights begin to come on and the river reflects the skyline, the atmosphere becomes even more impressive.
We grabbed a drink, found a seat with a view, and ended up staying far longer than planned. Sometimes the best travel moments are the simplest ones.
Looking back, the rooftop was one of the biggest reasons ICONSIAM felt like an experience rather than just a mall.
