Oahu has a reputation for being either wildly expensive or overly touristy — but after spending time in Honolulu, we realized something important: you can absolutely have a luxury-feeling Hawaii trip without blowing your entire vacation budget.
As a working couple with limited vacation time, we’re intentional about where we spend our money. We’re not trying to “do it all.” We’re trying to do the right things — the experiences that actually elevate a trip.
On this Honolulu trip, we splurged where it mattered most to us (food and experiences) and stayed practical where it didn’t. This balance gave us a vacation that felt indulgent, relaxed, and completely worth it — without the stress of overspending.
Here’s exactly what we splurged on, what we didn’t, and what we’d do again in a heartbeat.

Why This Approach Works for Working Couples
When you only have a week (or less) off work, your time and energy matter just as much as your budget. For us, “luxury” doesn’t mean five-star everything — it means:
- memorable meals
- unique experiences
- comfort and convenience
- no rushing or burnout
That mindset shaped every decision we made on Oahu.
Where We Splurged (and 100% Would Again)
1. Food: This Is Where We Went All In
We’re big food people, and Honolulu did not disappoint. Instead of spreading ourselves thin trying dozens of spots, we chose a few dinners that were genuinely worth planning around.
Orchard (Waikiki) – Our favourite meal on Oahu
Orchard was, without question, the standout dining experience of our entire trip.
From the moment we walked in, it felt intentional — calm, refined, and quietly confident. The space itself is elegant without being stuffy, and the service struck that perfect balance between attentive and relaxed.
The food was unbelievable. Every dish felt thoughtful, well-balanced, and beautifully executed, with flavours that were bold without being overwhelming. This wasn’t “flashy” food — it was the kind of meal where you can tell every element was considered.
This is absolutely a splurge dinner, but it’s the kind that feels justified the second your food hits the table. If you’re a foodie couple visiting Honolulu and you want one truly elevated dining experience, Orchard is the one we’d recommend without hesitation.

Deck – Best Atmosphere for a Romantic Evening
Deck delivered one of our favourite overall evenings in Honolulu.
Set with a direct view of Diamond Head, this is the kind of place where you time your reservation around sunset, order a couple of cocktails, and just let the night unfold. The atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting here — warm lighting, open air, and that unmistakable Hawaii evening glow.
The food was solid and well-executed, but what really made Deck special was the setting. It felt romantic without being formal, polished without being intimidating. This is a perfect dinner for couples who want a memorable night without committing to a long, multi-course experience.
MonkeyPod Kitchen – Elevated, Lively and Easy. A Hawaiian Staple.
MonkeyPod Kitchen was one of those places that just worked.
The vibe is lively and fun, the menu is approachable but elevated, and it feels equally appropriate whether you’re dressed up for dinner or coming straight from the beach. This is a great example of casual luxury — high-quality food without the formality.
MonkeyPod is also a true Hawaiian staple for us. We’ve been here multiple times in the Wailea area of Maui, so when we saw there was a location in Honolulu, it immediately went on our must-visit list. It’s one of those restaurants you return to because you know exactly what you’re getting — consistently good food, solid drinks, and an atmosphere that always delivers.
It’s an ideal spot for a night when you want great food, good drinks, and a bit of energy, but don’t want the commitment of a fine-dining experience. For working couples who still want to enjoy themselves without overthinking dinner plans, MonkeyPod is an easy win.
Yes… The Cheesecake Factory — A Fun, No-Brainer Option (and a Canadian Novelty)
This one might surprise people — but we actually enjoyed stopping at Cheesecake Factory in Waikiki.
As Canadians, this wasn’t a “familiar comfort food” situation for us. Cheesecake Factory isn’t something we have at home, so it felt more like a novelty than a fallback. After long days in the sun, sometimes you just want an easy, low-effort dinner — and this fit that role perfectly.
The menu is massive, portions are generous, and it’s exactly what you want when you don’t feel like planning or dressing up. This wasn’t a splurge meal, but it didn’t need to be.
Luxury tip: Not every dinner needs to be elevated. Knowing when to keep things simple makes your splurge meals feel even more special.
2. Renting a Sports Car for the Day
This ended up being one of our favourite decisions from the entire trip.
Instead of renting a standard car for the full stay, we chose to splurge on a sports car for one day — a convertible Mazda Miata — and used it to explore some of Oahu’s most scenic roads. We rented the car through Turo, which gave us access to unique options you just don’t get with traditional rental companies.
With the top down, ocean air coming through, and no real schedule to follow, the day felt effortless. Coastal drives, pull-off viewpoints, and slow stretches of road turned into moments we didn’t plan for — and honestly, those ended up being the highlights.
What could have been a simple way to get from point A to point B became an experience in itself. It was a small splurge, but one that created a lasting memory and added a completely different layer to the trip.
We’ve done this before in Maui, where we rented bright blue Corvette C8s for the day — an experience that cost over $500 and was, without question, incredible. There’s something undeniably fun about driving a high-performance car on island roads, especially when the scenery is that good.
But what this trip reinforced is something we don’t always expect: the experience matters more than the price tag.
The Miata on Oahu didn’t have the same horsepower or wow factor on paper, but with the top down, warm air coming through, and the island unfolding around us, it delivered just as much joy. It gave us freedom, flexibility, and that feeling of being fully present — without the pressure of “making the most” of an expensive rental.
This was such a good reminder that you don’t need the most expensive option to create a memorable moment. Choosing a car that fit the day, the roads, and the pace of the trip was what made it special.
It’s a perfect example of luxury-minded travel without luxury pricing — spending intentionally on experiences that feel elevated, not just expensive.

Where We Didn’t Splurge (and Were Glad We Didn’t)
Our Hotel: Mid-Range, Perfect Location
Waikiki Resort Hotel — Mid-Range Comfort with an Unbeatable Location
WWe stayed at the Waikiki Resort Hotel, which sits comfortably in the mid-range category — and for this trip, it was exactly what we wanted.
The biggest win here is the location. Being just steps from Waikiki Beach made a noticeable difference in how relaxed the trip felt. We could head out early for a morning beach walk, pop back mid-day to cool off, or head out again in the evening without ever feeling rushed or overcommitted. When you’re trying to maximize a limited amount of vacation time, that convenience really matters.
The hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. It didn’t try to be over-the-top luxury, but it also didn’t feel tired or neglected. For us, the room was a place to reset, sleep well, and get ready for the next day — and it did that job perfectly.
Parking Tip That Saved Us Money
Like many hotels in Waikiki, overnight parking at the resort comes with a pretty steep daily fee. Instead of paying the hotel’s parking surcharge, we chose to park a few blocks away at the Waikiki Banyan, which worked out much better for us.
The walk was easy, the location felt safe, and the savings added up quickly over the course of the stay. If you’re planning to rent a car for part or all of your trip, this is a simple way to keep costs down without sacrificing convenience.
Luxury-minded takeaway: Sometimes luxury isn’t about upgrading — it’s about knowing where to be practical so you can spend more on the things you actually care about, like food and experiences.
Transportation on Oahu: Keeping It Simple (and Strategic)
Aside from our sports car day, we kept transportation on Oahu intentionally simple — and that was very much by design.
Waikiki itself is extremely walkable. Between the beach, restaurants, and shops, we found ourselves walking most days, which made the trip feel relaxed instead of over-scheduled. For evenings out or days we didn’t feel like driving, ride-shares were easy, quick, and reliable.
When we did have a car, it was because we had a clear purpose — exploring scenic drives, getting out of Waikiki, and reaching places that feel quieter and more local. That’s where having access to a car really pays off on Oahu.
This was especially true when we ventured out to some of the island’s less crowded spots. Oahu has so much more to offer once you leave the main tourist areas, and having the flexibility to drive made those moments possible.
If you’re looking to escape the crowds, we shared our favourite quieter beach spots here:

Luxury-minded takeaway: You don’t need a car every day in Waikiki — but renting one strategically, even for just a day or two, opens up a completely different side of the island. That balance keeps costs down while still giving you access to the experiences that make Oahu feel special.

What This Trip Reinforced for Us
This trip to Honolulu reinforced something we already believe strongly: intentional planning leads to better travel — especially when you’re balancing full-time work with limited vacation time.
Instead of trying to do everything, we focused on what would actually make the trip feel memorable. That meant choosing fewer, better meals, planning experiences we genuinely cared about, and keeping logistics as simple as possible. Having tools in place made a big difference too — being able to navigate easily without worrying about data or signal was huge, and using offline Google Maps made getting around the island stress-free, especially when driving outside of Waikiki. If you haven’t used it before, it’s one of those small things that quietly makes travel smoother:
How To Use Google Maps Offline For Travel (A Life-Saver Hack)
More than anything, this trip was a reminder that traveling well doesn’t require endless time off or quitting your job. With a bit of planning and the right mindset, it’s completely realistic to fit trips like this into a normal work schedule. We’ve shared exactly how we approach that balance — from planning ahead to using vacation days strategically — here:
Work Full Time? Here’s How to Still Travel the World Twice a Year
For us, this approach is what makes travel sustainable. It allows us to enjoy high-end experiences, great food, and meaningful adventures — without coming home exhausted or overwhelmed. And that’s the kind of travel we’ll keep choosing.

Final Thoughts: Luxury Is About Intention, Not Price
Oahu is the perfect destination for luxury-minded adventure and food travel — if you’re intentional.
You don’t need to splurge on everything. You just need to splurge on the right things.
For working couples especially, this approach creates trips that feel elevated, memorable, and restorative — without coming home stressed about money or exhausted from overdoing it.
And that’s the kind of travel we’ll keep choosing.
