The island of Maui is broken up into six (6) distinctive areas. South Maui shines with its sunny beaches and luxurious resorts, while West Maui blends historic charm with breathtaking sunsets and upscale accommodations. For surfers and nature enthusiasts, North Shore delivers a laid-back, adventurous vibe, while Central Maui is the perfect hub for exploring the island’s cultural gems. East Maui captivates with the lush rainforests and waterfalls along the Road to Hana, and Upcountry Maui provides a tranquil retreat with stunning vistas and farm-to-table dining. In this blog, we’ll explore each area in detail to help you find the best area to stay in Maui for your dream vacation.

Best Area to Stay in Maui: South Maui

Kihei, Maui

Kihei Overview

Climate: Kihei is one of the driest and sunniest areas on the island due to the location right near the Haleakala.
Best For: Kihei is best for families, as it contains a bunch of self contained resorts.
Pros: Kihei is centrally located to all of the other areas of Maui. It has amazing climate and beaches.
Cons: Large crowds at times.

About Kihei

Like we mentioned above, Kihei has some of the best weather on the island. Due to that, it is also the most popular places on the island.

Kihei is located in South Maui. In South Maui you will find beatiful pristine beaches and tons of places to snorkel. Kihei is also home to the most restaurants and shopping. Having being right in the “Heart of Maui” it is centrally located to every other area of Maui.

Wailea, Maui

Wailea Overview

Climate: Much like Kihei, Wailea sees very little to no rain, and lots of sunshine.
Best For: Best beaches in Maui! (Our opinion)
Pros: The best climate, lots of shopping and things to do.
Cons: Less budget friendly

About Wailea

This is in our opinion the second best place to stay in all of Maui. Just south of Kihei within the South Maui region. Wailea offers some of the nicest beaches in all of Maui, with the softest sand and lots of hikes in the area. Wailea is arguably the most expensive area of the island, but that says something! Its beautiful!

If you are looking for a 5 star resort, look no further. There are so many 5 star resorts to choose from, and trust us, they are all SO gorgeous and luxurious. Wailea also has many high end luxury shopping at The Shops. Waliea is for those with a deeper pocket.

Ka’anapali has some of the islands nicest resorts, from expensive to budget friendly. It is also home to 2 championship golf courses.

Pros: Very beautiful remote place on the island, unique travel.

About Hana

Hana is one of the most remote and secluded areas on the island of Maui, offering a stark contrast to the bustling regions of South Maui. Known for its lush landscapes, Hana receives an impressive 55 inches of rain annually, making it one of the wettest places on the island. Amenities are minimal, adding to its charm as a peaceful, off-the-grid retreat. We recommend spending 1-2 days here, as many visitors opt to stay overnight while exploring the iconic Road to Hana, making it a perfect stop for those seeking a short yet unforgettable escape into nature.
