When we first started planning our trip to Thailand, one of our biggest questions was also one of the hardest to answer:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We considered Phuket. We looked at Krabi. We read countless opinions from travellers who seemed to love each destination for completely different reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both looked absolutely beautiful, but the more we researched, the more difficult the decision became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we started hearing about Koh Samui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we had watched The White Lotus<\/em>, and knowing that part of the series had been filmed on the island immediately caught our attention. The tropical scenery, hillside resorts, ocean views, and relaxed atmosphere reminded us of Maui\u2014one of our favourite destinations in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As couples who love beautiful beaches, memorable restaurants, and destinations where the accommodation becomes part of the trip, Koh Samui seemed like the right fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we chose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And after spending five days on the island, we understood why so many people fall in love with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui was beautiful. The beaches were incredible, the food was memorable, and our Airbnb offered far more space and luxury than we actually needed. Yet compared with what a similar villa would have cost in Hawaii or many Caribbean destinations, it felt surprisingly reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did not choose Koh Samui because we thought Phuket or Krabi would be disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, both destinations still look incredible, and we would happily visit either one on a future trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui simply seemed to offer the experience we wanted most at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had already spent time exploring Bangkok, and we wanted the island portion of our trip to feel slower. We were looking for somewhere with beautiful beaches, great food, comfortable accommodation, and enough activities to keep us interested without feeling like we needed to rush around every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui appeared to have that balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had lively areas, but it did not seem as though the entire island revolved around nightlife. It had luxury resorts, but you did not necessarily need to stay in one to experience the island. It had excursions, temples, markets, caf\u00e9s, and beaches, but it also seemed like the kind of place where doing absolutely nothing for an afternoon would feel completely acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mattered to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did not want to arrive on an island and immediately create another packed itinerary. We wanted somewhere that would encourage us to slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui did exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first views of Koh Samui immediately felt different from the energy of Bangkok.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The moment we arrived, the pace of the trip changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangkok had been exciting, energetic, and filled with constant movement. There was always another market, restaurant, temple, mall, or neighbourhood to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui felt like the opposite in the best possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roads were quieter than we expected. Palm trees appeared everywhere. The ocean never seemed very far away, and even an ordinary drive felt scenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no immediate pressure to start sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We could check into our villa, look out over the water, and allow ourselves to settle into the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the energy of Bangkok, that feeling was exactly what we needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are destinations where you arrive and immediately begin thinking about what you need to do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui made us want to stop thinking about the schedule altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Koh Samui Airbnb Was More Than We Needed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most memorable parts of our stay was the accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We booked a beautiful three-bedroom Airbnb with a private pool, ocean views, and plenty of indoor and outdoor living space. It was located in a gated community, steps from Bangrak Beach and only a few minutes from Fisherman\u2019s Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For five days, the Airbnb cost approximately CAD $2,300<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, that amount might sound high for Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this was not a small hotel room or a basic apartment. It was an entire villa with three bedrooms, a private pool, an ocean view, and enough room for everyone to spread out comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was honestly more space than we needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the price was reasonable enough\u2014especially when divided between the people travelling with us\u2014that booking it felt like an easy decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A comparable property in Maui or another major tropical destination could easily cost significantly more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is where Koh Samui began to feel like particularly good value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were not travelling on the smallest possible budget, but we were able to enjoy a level of comfort and privacy that would normally be associated with a much more expensive vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The villa was also well equipped with everything we needed, which made the stay feel easy from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We could prepare coffee in the morning, relax beside our own pool, and come back after a day of exploring without feeling as though we needed to immediately leave again for dinner or entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying Near Bangrak Beach and Fisherman\u2019s Village<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The villa\u2019s location was another reason the accommodation worked so well for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangrak gave us a quieter base without making us feel isolated. We were close to the beach, restaurants, and everyday conveniences, while Fisherman\u2019s Village was only a short drive away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That balance was ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fisherman\u2019s Village was one of the easiest places to spend an evening. It had restaurants, shops, caf\u00e9s, and a lively waterfront atmosphere without feeling like we had entered an overwhelming party district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was somewhere we could walk around, choose a restaurant, and allow the evening to unfold without much planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangrak Beach itself felt calmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to walk toward the water or see the ocean from our accommodation made the trip feel like an island vacation even during the moments when we were not actively sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For travellers who want access to restaurants and popular areas without staying in the busiest part of Koh Samui, we thought this area offered a great compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We Rented a Car\u2014But Were Nervous to Drive It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We rented a car directly from the airport for approximately CAD $200<\/strong> for the duration of our trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before arriving, renting a car seemed like the obvious choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would give us the freedom to explore different beaches, visit restaurants around the island, and avoid relying on taxis every time we wanted to go somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we picked it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driving internationally for the first time made all of us a little nervous. We had already spent time in Bangkok, where the traffic looked far more intense than anything we were accustomed to, and we could not completely separate that image from the idea of driving elsewhere in Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, we did not use the car as much as we had planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the first part of the stay, it spent more time parked than moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we finally started driving, however, it was easier than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roads around the areas we visited were manageable, navigation was straightforward, and we became more comfortable after the first few drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, the nerves were probably a bigger obstacle than the driving itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car was still useful, particularly when visiting places that were farther from our accommodation. It gave us flexibility and meant that we did not need to arrange transportation every time we wanted to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would we rent one again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably\u2014but we would make an effort to use it more confidently from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travellers who are uncomfortable driving abroad can still visit Koh Samui without renting a car. Taxis and other transportation options are available, especially around the main visitor areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us, the rental was less about necessity and more about having the freedom to move around on our own schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Take <\/p>

A rental car gave us more freedom, but we did not use it enough to call it essential. If you are staying close to restaurants and beaches, you can still enjoy Koh Samui without driving. If you want to explore the island independently, a car can be worth it once you feel comfortable. <\/p> <\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Beaches Looked Exactly How We Hoped They Would<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The beaches were one of the main reasons we chose Koh Samui, and they did not disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warm water, palm trees, soft sand, and tropical scenery were never difficult to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What surprised us most was not simply how beautiful the beaches were. It was how easily they became part of everyday life on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beach did not always need to be the main activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it was simply where we went for a walk. Other times it was the view beside a restaurant, the backdrop to a drive, or the place we stopped without having planned to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That made Koh Samui feel consistently tropical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangrak Beach was especially convenient because it was so close to our villa. It was not necessarily the kind of beach where we planned an entire day, but having it nearby made the ocean feel like part of our accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other parts of the island offered different beach experiences, from livelier stretches near restaurants and resorts to quieter areas where the pace felt much slower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We did not visit every famous beach during our five days, and that is one of the reasons we would happily return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui is not a place where you need to race between beaches simply to say you saw them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick a few. Stay longer than planned. Let at least one beach day have no schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we could recommend only one excursion from Koh Samui, it would be a day trip to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We booked our experience with Mr. Tu for approximately CAD $65 per person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It became one of the highlights of our entire trip to Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day took us away from Koh Samui and into a landscape of limestone islands, clear water, hidden bays, and viewpoints that looked almost unreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the kind of scenery that reminded us why we had travelled so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience included time on the water, opportunities to snorkel, and the chance to see a completely different side of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the journey between stops was memorable. Looking out from the boat and seeing islands rise from the water made the excursion feel like more than a single activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It felt like a full day of discovering somewhere entirely new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without hesitation. Our Ang Thong Marine Park excursion was not only our favourite activity around Koh Samui\u2014it was one of the experiences we remember most from our entire trip to Thailand. <\/p> <\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Food Was More Expensive Than Bangkok\u2014but Still Worth It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Food in Koh Samui was more expensive than what we experienced in Bangkok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was certainly more expensive than Chiang Mai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that did not mean it felt unreasonably priced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui is an island destination with a strong tourism industry, so we expected prices to be somewhat higher. The difference was noticeable, especially in more polished restaurants and popular visitor areas, but it never ruined the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, the food was worth eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found memorable meals, beautiful settings, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy Thai food alongside international options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That variety made dining easy for a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some evenings could be casual, while others felt like part of the experience itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest surprises came when we visited the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We expected the restaurant to be extremely expensive. After all, this is one of the island\u2019s most recognizable luxury resorts, with the kind of setting that makes you assume every part of the experience will come with a significant premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, we found the restaurant prices more reasonable than expected for the location and level of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not the cheapest meal of the trip, but it did not feel inaccessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience gave us an opportunity to see the property, enjoy the views, and spend time in a setting that had helped put Koh Samui on our travel radar in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For anyone curious about the resort but not planning to stay there, visiting for a meal can be a great way to experience part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meal reminded us of something we often notice while travelling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food varied depending on where we ate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local and casual options remained more affordable, while resort restaurants and more polished venues naturally cost more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, we would not describe Koh Samui as the place to visit if your only goal is to travel through Thailand as cheaply as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are better destinations for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you want private accommodation, beaches, excursions, and memorable restaurants at a price that can still compare favourably with other island vacations, Koh Samui can offer very good value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui will not be the perfect Thai island for every traveller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is an excellent fit for people who want a trip that combines relaxation with enough variety to prevent the island from feeling repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Couples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui works especially well for couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beaches, ocean-view restaurants, private villas, and slower evenings naturally create a romantic atmosphere without requiring every day to revolve around a formal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can book a memorable dinner, take a day trip, or spend an afternoon doing almost nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three can feel equally worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Groups of Friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The availability of larger villas makes Koh Samui an appealing destination for groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing a multi-bedroom property can make private pools and ocean views much more affordable than they would be for one couple travelling alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also gives everyone common space to spend time together without relying on hotel restaurants or public areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travellers Who Want Comfort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui offers plenty of opportunities for comfort and luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean every traveller needs to book a five-star resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Airbnb showed that it is possible to experience privacy, space, and resort-like amenities without staying at one of the island\u2019s most expensive properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travellers Who Want the Lowest Possible Prices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is where Koh Samui may not be the strongest choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your priority is stretching a small budget as far as possible, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and some other parts of Thailand will likely be more affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui can still provide good value, but it is not necessarily a budget destination by Thai standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travellers Focused Entirely on Nightlife<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The island does have nightlife and busy areas, but that was not the focus of our trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We enjoyed Koh Samui most as a place for beaches, food, relaxation, and exploring with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travellers looking for a nonstop party experience may prefer to research which Thai island or neighbourhood best matches that specific priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Would Do Differently Next Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Five days gave us enough time to enjoy Koh Samui, but not enough time to feel finished with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may be the strongest sign that we chose the right island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we returned, we would stay for at least seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first change would be using the rental car more. Once we realized the driving was easier than expected, we wished we had started exploring confidently earlier in the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would also dedicate more time to visiting different beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of trying to see several in one day, we would choose one area, find a nearby restaurant, and spend the day there without rushing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would make more time for viewpoints, waterfalls, caf\u00e9s, and temples as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our trip leaned heavily toward relaxing at the villa, enjoying food, and taking the Ang Thong excursion. We do not regret that, but the island had much more that we could have explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, we would leave the schedule flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koh Samui is not somewhere we would want to experience through a tightly packed checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The island was at its best when we allowed ourselves to slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Five days was enough to understand why people love Koh Samui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was not enough to experience everything the island offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For a trip that combines relaxation with a few activities, five days can work. We had time to enjoy our villa, visit restaurants, spend time near the beach, and take a full-day excursion to Ang Thong Marine Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, the trip felt short once we became comfortable driving and realized how much more of the island we wanted to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Seven days would have given us a better balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Is Koh Samui Similar to Maui?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Koh Samui and Maui are not interchangeable destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They have different cultures, landscapes, food, histories, and travel experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But we understand why Koh Samui caught our attention as people who love Maui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Both destinations can combine tropical scenery, beautiful accommodations, memorable restaurants, beaches, and a slower pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Both can also feel luxurious without requiring every moment of the trip to be formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The similarity was less about the islands looking exactly alike and more about the way they made us feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We could spend the morning near the ocean, enjoy a scenic drive, have a memorable meal, and end the day at a beautiful accommodation without feeling like we had missed something by not completing a long sightseeing list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That rhythm is one of the things we love most about Maui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We found part of it again in Koh Samui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Koh Samui was more affordable for the type of villa we booked, and the Thai food made the overall experience completely distinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But the sense of settling into island life\u2014the feeling that the accommodation, meals, beaches, and slower moments were all equally important\u2014felt familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It offered the tropical island experience we had hoped for: beautiful beaches, warm weather, excellent food, memorable excursions, and accommodation that felt like a destination of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was more expensive than Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but it still provided strong value compared with many other island destinations we have visited or considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Most importantly, Koh Samui gave our Thailand trip balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bangkok had been exciting and energetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Koh Samui allowed us to breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We could wake up without rushing, spend time at the villa, explore when we felt like it, and enjoy meals without immediately planning the next activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That slower pace became one of our favourite parts of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Koh Samui will be especially worthwhile for couples, groups of friends, and travellers who want an island with both relaxing and adventurous experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It may not be the cheapest destination in Thailand, and it may not be the right choice for someone whose only priority is nightlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But for us, it delivered exactly what we hoped it would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The island was beautiful without feeling like beauty was the only thing it offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It gave us an unforgettable day at Ang Thong Marine Park, peaceful time beside the ocean, a villa we still talk about, and meals that became part of the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We arrived wondering whether we had selected the right Thai island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We left wondering when we could return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The first nervous drive that turned out to be easier than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The beaches that made us forget the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The day spent surrounded by the islands of Ang Thong Marine Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The meals that reminded us why food becomes such an important part of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And the feeling of reaching the island after Bangkok and realizing that, for a few days, we had nowhere we needed to rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Koh Samui was the right island for this trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
