It’s tucked away in Kailua, and the name Lanikai literally translates to “heavenly sea”—and trust me, it lives up to the name.

Getting There:
It’s about a 30-45 minute drive from Waikiki. You’ll want to plug “Lanikai Beach” into Google Maps to find your way. Once you’re there, parking can be a bit of a challenge since it’s nestled in a residential area. I recommend arriving early to snag a spot and being mindful of local parking rules.

Best Time to Visit:
Weekdays are your best bet for avoiding crowds, and early mornings are magical—think pastel sunrises over the Mokulua Islands. Summers (June–September) are especially nice, with warm, calm waters perfect for a morning swim.

What to Expect:
The sand feels like powdered sugar underfoot, and the water is so clear you’ll swear you’re swimming in liquid turquoise. Kayaking to the Mokulua Islands is a must if you’re feeling adventurous. Just a heads-up: there are no restrooms or showers here, so plan ahead!

Lanikai Pillbox Sunrise Hike: The Perfect Start to Your Beach Day

If you’re visiting Lanikai Beach, don’t miss the chance to kick off your day with the Lanikai Pillbox Sunrise Hike. This moderately challenging trail rewards early risers with jaw-dropping panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, the Mokulua Islands, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean bathed in soft golden hues.

The hike takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the first “pillbox” (a WWII-era military bunker), and though the trail can be steep at times, it’s manageable for most fitness levels. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and don’t forget your camera—the sunrise views are truly Instagram-worthy.

After the hike, head down to Lanikai Beach to cool off in the tranquil turquoise waters or relax on its powdery white sands. Pairing this hike with a beach day makes for an unforgettable Oahu adventure!

Pro Tip: Arrive early (around 5:30 AM) to find parking and secure a great spot on the trail for sunrise.

2. You can use Google Maps to find the resort. While Turtle Bay is part of a private resort, the beach itself is open to the public. There’s paid parking on-site, and it’s worth every penny.

Best Time to Visit:
Head out during the summer months (May–September) when the waters are calmer. I like to visit mid-morning when the turtles are most active along the shore.

What to Expect:
Crystal-clear water, vibrant coral reefs, and a chance to snorkel alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles—what’s not to love? Located on Oahu’s rugged western shore, Keawaʻula Beach is pure, untouched beauty.

Getting There:
It’s a bit of a trek, about 1.5 hours from Waikiki, but the drive along the coastline is breathtaking. Follow these directions on Google Maps. Summers are ideal for swimming, but the waves can be rough in winter, so always check conditions.

What to Expect:
Soft sand, turquoise waves, and the stunning Waianae Mountain Range as a backdrop. This beach is perfect for sunbathing and photography. There are no lifeguards or facilities, so pack everything you need, including sunscreen and water.

Why These Beaches?

Each of these spots offers something unique: Lanikai’s postcard-perfect views, Turtle Bay’s thriving marine life, and Keawaʻula’s untouched beauty. Whether you’re kayaking, snorkeling, or just soaking in the scenery, these beaches have a way of making you feel like you’ve found your own private paradise.

So, what are you waiting for?
